Special protection area Bohemian Forest (Šumava) is situated in the southern Bohemia on the borders with Germany and Austria.
Birs area is protected because of nine bird species - the black stork (Ciconia nigra), the black woodpecker (Dryocopus martius), the three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus), the corn crake (Crex crex), the hazel grouse (Bonasa bonasia, Tetrastes bonasia), the Eurasian pygmy owl (Glaucidium passerinum), the boreal owl (Aegolius funereus), the western capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and the black grouse (Tetrao tetrix).
